Level a picture book, page by page
Paste your manuscript with a blank line between pages. Your browser counts what a reading teacher would: words and sentences per page, the Spache and Flesch-Kincaid grades, Dolch sight words, the rhyme scheme and rhythm of every page, refrains and page turns — free, before you sign in. Then a reading teacher levels it against the age you are writing for, or revises it to that level while keeping your story.
Each example ships with a saved model run, so you can see a whole level report and a whole revision — including the reconciliation — without signing in and without spending a credit.
What this does, and what it does not
The numbers are each formula's definition, applied as written: the revised Spache grade is 0.121 × words per sentence + 0.082 × the percentage of word types not on Spache's familiar list + 0.659 (Spache 1974; regular inflections, proper nouns and numerals count as familiar); Flesch reading ease is 206.835 − 1.015 × words per sentence − 84.6 × syllables per word (Flesch 1948); the Flesch-Kincaid grade is 0.39 × words per sentence + 11.8 × syllables per word − 15.59 (Kincaid 1975); the New Dale-Chall raw score is 0.1579 × the percentage of words not on the 3,000-word list + 0.0496 × words per sentence, plus 3.6365 when that percentage is over 5 (Chall and Dale 1995); Dolch coverage is the share of words on Dolch's 220 service words (Dolch 1936). Syllables and rhymes come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. A sentence ends at a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark — not at a line break or an ellipsis, which in a picture book is a page-turn cue.
A grade measures what a child can decode alone; a picture book is read aloud to a child two to four years younger than its grade implies, which is why a Spache grade of 2 is at home in a book for four-year-olds. The word, page and grade ceilings per age are the desk's own trade guidance, not a rule. Every figure the teacher then writes is re-read against this engine, and the page shows you where the two disagree. It does not judge whether a story is good.
